HIPAA –Emailing , Texting, and BYOD (myths vs realities)

Recorded Webinar | Brian L. Tuttle | Aug 01 ,2017 | 1:0:pm EST | 90 Minutes

Description

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act was passed in 1996 to safeguard patients’ health information and to ensure that none of their medical history would become public knowledge.  There was no accounting for today’s modern avenues of sharing information; even unintentionally violating HIPAA can result in steep fines, lawsuits, and penalties. With over 17 years of experience working as a HIPPA compliance auditor as well as being an expert witness on multiple HIPPA cases, I have a unique understanding of how HIPPA affects and relates to business technology, particularly portable devices.  I will uncover the nuances of the HIPPA law by presenting knowledge gained from over 1000 risk assessments and many years working directly with the Office of Civil Rights HIPPA auditors.  This conference will cover texting, encryption, medical messaging, email, voice data and other risk factors that come into play when practices use personal devices.

Why should you attend ?

All medical services are at risk for lawsuits and cash payouts regarding wrongful disclosure of a patient’s private health information.  This webinar will show you how to limit these risks by being proactive and using good business practices.

At the end of this conference, attendees will:

  • Understand exactly what can and can’t be transmitted under the HIPPA law
  • Understand new changes from the Health and Human Services Department and how these changes relate to HIPPA enforcement, specifically information transmitted on portable devices, emailed or texted PHI’s.
  • Protect yourself from companies that sell you more than what is actually needed to protect your practice from HIPPA violations
  • Separating truth from fallacy in online information regarding HIPPA enforcement
  • Learn how in these modern times, a trial attorney is a higher risk than the Federal Government itself
  • Learn to avoid being at risk during a HIPPA audit
  • Limit your risk of lawsuits by patients who have had their HIPPA laws violated by bad IT practices
  • Learn from my experience as an expert witness on court cases where lawsuits have occurred for practices and businesses who did not do their due diligence and placed their enterprise at risk
